A Summer Of Coding
A Summer Of Coding
The CODEd Academy Pilot was a free, three-week fully-immersive computer science learning experience for students either entering middle school or currently in 6th grade. Students learned design thinking principles through project-based computer science activities. Students learned how to develop Scratch animations, design dynamic characters and settings for their own games through a free summer enrichment program. The CODEd Academy pilot prevented summer learning loss and prepared students to be a step ahead the next school year by combining Computer Science and Common Core.
Students were given opportunities to experience the tech industry first-hand through field trips and ongoing conversations with professionals at Salesforce, NextThing Co, Dynamicland and Reddit. Using Pre- and Post-Testing we assessed student understanding of key 6-8th grade Common Core math, science and ELA standards.

The CODEd Academy Summer 2017 Pilot has set the stage for the creation of a truly innovative academic model. We are grateful to our community, family, youth, and industry partners for making this a transformative summer.
CODEd Academy tackles the problem of tech inclusivity by giving black and brown youth the skills, language, and vision needed to become the next tech industry leaders.
CODEd Academy students spent three weeks engaged in Computer Science (CS) projects interwoven into common core math, science, and English language arts standards.
Created values-based game characters, story lines, and settings to inspire video games of their own coding and design. Students visited four local and International tech businesses whose work ranges from cloud computing to research.
